On Sunday, I went to a movie theater for the first time in a year. I saw “The Great Gatsby”.

By chance, I read the novel written by Fitzgerald in English last year. I spent several months reading it with a native teacher in my school. Having perused the book, I was very interested in the movie. In addition, I saw a DVD of “The Great Gatsby”, released in 1974, starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow last summer.

When I compare the new movie with the one which was made 40 years ago, I like Robert Redford’s better than Leonardo DiCaprio’s. There are three reasons why I prefer the old one. Firstly, Redford’s portrayal is closer to the character I imagined as I read the novel. Secondly, Mia Farrow fits in with the character of the novel. Thirdly, the story line of the new film is somehow different from the novel. Of course, the old film’s story is also different from the original.

If you are a fan of DiCaprio and you want to enjoy the bubbly atmosphere of America in the 1920s, I am sure you can enjoy it. There are a lot of beautiful scenes.

(From here, I am going to write about the story. If you haven’t seen the movie, please don’t read the following.)

The movie starts from the scene of a consultation room, which made me feel uneasy. The scene was not in the novel and it completely changed the subtle nuance of the original. Nick, Gatsby’s best friend, begins to talk about Gatsby in the room of the psychologist. In the end, Nick finishes writing his memory titled, “The Great Gatsby”. In my interpretation of the new film, Nick could be a writer. He might become Fitzgerald. Anyway, Tobey Maguire, the actor who played the role of Nick this time, performed quite well and it was moving.
The party scenes are so gorgeous and entertaining. This is quite an American movie, I think.

Cinematizing classical literature seems to be really difficult, since everybody has his or her own interpretation on the novel. Moreover, it is impossible to follow the original exactly.

I enjoyed watching prosperous America in the 1920s and getting out of the heat for a few hours.

*英語ミニ知識:なるべく前回の記事を忠実に訳そうとしましたが、 初めから英語で書く方がずっと簡単でした。というのも数学ではないですから、イコールの表現がなかなかないからです。たとえば「ネタばらし」という言い方も特にないので、“I am going to write about the story.” *
